Growing up in a slum in Notting Hill, made homeless at a young age with his four brothers and sent to a young offenders’ institution at 15, he went on to establish a pioneering magazine and now works to offer others the tools to make a success of their own live

John is the founder and editor of The Big Issue, a pioneering publication sold on the streets by homeless vendors looking to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. Homeless at five, in an orphanage at seven, John began shoplifting, house-breaking and committing arson from the age of 10 and received several prison sentences. In his late twenties, John became in involved in politics. He also fathered three children, became a printer and successfully ran his own business. Then, at the age of 45 he began The Big Issue and for the last 14 years he has been in charge of its development. John was awarded the MBE for ‘services to homeless people’ in June 1995 and is a Fellow of John Moore's University, Liverpool, a visiting professor at Lincoln University, and a Doctor of Letters at Oxford Brookes University. In 2003 he was chosen by The Queen as one of the Most Important Pioneers in Her Majesty’s Reign and a year later he received from the United Nations a Scroll of Excellence for his international work in poverty. In the same year he won a public vote by BBC London as London’s Living Legend.
